Holston Lake & Holston Dam

This is one of our favorite rides when we are looking for a destination close to home where we can get away from it all. Its a great place to pack a picnic and head up into the Mountains to be alone and just vegetate. The views from atop the dam are amazing and its like being on top of the world. Most days there is very little traffic up there so you get the picnic area to yourself during the week. The dam itself is thought to be one of the largest earthen dams in the world, but I am not sure about this claim. The nice thing about this place is that it is so close to our home. About a 15 - 20 minute ride. Maybe now some can see why I love this area so much. It has a lot to offer and the scenery is awesome.
Located a few miles down the road from the dam is the other end of Holston Lake. This area has a public boat launching area as well as a large marina where a great deal of residents live on house boats. They are something to see as they are typically two floors and quite large and comfortable. Below you will find pictures showing the area surrounding the dam as well as the lake.
