A Coaches Dream

I started coaching back in the early 80's and found myself enjoying coaching kids and teaching them the game of football. Being a former quarterback, obviously my expertise has been on the offensive side of the ball. Coaching the backfield and working with the quarterbacks, running backs and receivers has always been my area of concentration.

Most coaches will tell you that coaching goes beyond showing kids techniques at different positions or teaching them a new offensive / defensive play or strategy. Your a father figure at times, your a medic, your a disciplinarian, your a trainer, and your many other things. When coaching a football team you find yourself in a position of influence and power. This affords the coach the opportunity to teach kids life long skills as well. How to be a gracious winner, how to accept defeat, how to be a good sportsman and more importantly how to be a team player and count on others.

But the most important thing I have found that is sometimes a challenge but offers great personal rewards is taking a kid and helping him achieve. Showing him he has talent, instilling confidence in himself and helping him bring out the best within him, as a football player but also an individual. I try and never miss an opportunity to raise a kids level of self esteem. I have always felt it is so important to make these kids believe in themselves as individuals as well as a team.

I was extremely blessed with the kids I worked with at Bishop McLaughlin High School. Our team members covered the spectrum, from talented athletics to the kids who had never seen a football. But the one thing every player on the Hurricane team has is respect for me and the entire coaching staff as well as respect for each other. They also formed a desire to win and to never give up in the face of defeat.

Words will never describe just how proud I am of this football team, nor will they ever describe how great it felt to walk onto a football field and work with high school football players again. Its been a dream realized to make a comeback and its been awesome working with such a great group of kids and coaches. Thanks Canes for allowing me to be part of the team and get your offense squared away. And a very special thanks to my good friend and confidant Head coach Marty Williams for believing in me from the start.

Go Canes...........
